The NetGalley Team’s Most-Anticipated Books of 2023

A collage of the covers included in this article

A new year is only a few weeks away, and that means it’s time to start working on a new TBR list. As you can imagine, the NetGalley team loves looking ahead to see which books are coming out next. Here’s a roundup of the books we can’t wait to pick up in 2023!

Tarah

Phaedra by Laura Shepperson

Phaedra has everything that my go-to novels have: mythology, the ability to completely transport me, and a healthy dash of feminism. Luckily I won’t have to wait too long for this January release to become available and make its way to my “Currently Reading” list.

Kelly

Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller

I read Diana Biller’s The Widow of Rose House earlier this year and was blown away by her writing and the characters she created. When I saw she had a new book coming out, I requested it immediately! Set at a Viennese Victorian-era hotel, this book combines romance and mystery. Also, can we take a moment to bask in the glory of this cover? Absolutely stunning!

Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert

Talia Hibbert is an author I would read anything from—a grocery list, a manual on cleaning the garbage disposal. I guarantee she’d find a way to make it charming, hilarious, and delightful. I’ve read everything she’s published thus far and was ecstatic to learn she was making her YA debut in 2023. This tale of academic rivals forced to team up is high on my TBR.

The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles

There are few things I love more than queer historical romances and second-chance romances, so KJ Charles combining the two has me hooked! This book follows a baronet and a smuggler who re-enter each other’s lives when one is testifying against the other’s sister—talk about a dramatic reunion. I have this book downloaded and can’t wait to dive in.

Darcy

The Late Americans by Brandon Taylor

Whenever I hear Brandon Taylor speak in an interview or podcast, I think about how much I would love to know him personally. I can’t wait for this novel. I’m sure it will be a captivating story with his characteristic depth and brilliance.

Hallie

The Shadow Sister by Lily Meade

Did someone say speculative thriller? The Shadow Sister is a YA debut about a teen girl, Sutton, who disappears and comes back not quite right. Her sister, Casey, who hasn’t had the best relationship with Sutton in the past, immediately notices something is off and is unsettled by the changes she sees. I’m hooked already and I’ve only read the synopsis. The Shadow Sister is at the top of my 2023 must-reads since it promises a gripping story about complicated families.

Sun Keep Rising by Kristen R. Lee

As a former teen librarian, I know how crucial it is for teens to have books that really reflect them and the situations they may face. I loved Kristen R. Lee’s Required Reading for the Disenfranchised Freshman, published in early 2022, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting her next novel. Sun Keep Rising features a teen mom who is trying her best to get by as she faces gentrification, food insecurity, and learning to be a parent for the first time. I know Lee will bring a relatable teen voice to this highly-anticipated book that will find a place on so many bookshelves in 2023.

Alicia

These Still Black Waters by Christina McDonald

I don’t even need to know the plot—if Christina McDonald wrote it, I want to read it! I’ve devoured every one of her previous books and I have no doubt this one will be an amazing thriller as well. These Still Black Waters, the first book in the Jess Lambert series, follows Neve Maguire, who just moved back to her childhood home on Black Lake, where Jess is a detective. When a dead body is found floating behind Neve’s house, she fears she’s made a terrible mistake.
