Five Things to Discuss at Your February Book Club Meeting

The main topic of discussion at your February book club meeting will definitely be whichever exciting new release your group read. At We Are Bookish, we like to start and end our meetings with a bit of general bookish chatter! Here are five things to discuss during your February book club meeting.

Book crushes
Valentine’s Day is upon us, making it the perfect time to ask your book club members which literary characters they’re crushing on. I currently have heart eyes for Likotsi from Alyssa Cole’s Once Ghosted, Twice Shy and Remus Lupin from Harry Potter (always). While you’re at it, see who everyone’s favorite literary couple is.

Month-long reading challenge
Many readers use February to participate in #readingblackout, a challenge dedicated to reading only Black authors in honor of Black History Month. Ask your members if they’ve ever done anything similar, and talk about why challenges like this can be great starting points for helping us examine our reading habits and broaden our personal libraries.

BFFs
February also brings my favorite holiday: Galentine’s Day, an annual celebration of friendship and sisterhood created by the iconic Leslie Knope. Discuss which literary characters you’d want as friends or those you wouldn’t (cough Cersei cough), and the kinds of friendships you most enjoy reading about. Then take a look at which fictional BFFs these authors named as their favorites!

All-time favorite books
Bookish believes that one of the best way to get to know someone is by looking at their library. Ask your members what three books they’d recommend to someone who wanted to get to know them through their favorite reads.

Authors’ love letters
Writing a romantic love letter is an art. Look back on the authors that your group has read, and discuss which one would write the most romantic love letter. You can also chat about what characteristics matter most (lyricism, poetry, humor) when crafting the perfect one. While you’re at it, swap bookish Valentine’s Day cards!
