Are you ready to be one of the first to get an exclusive look at Kaira Rouda’s next thriller? The Widow follows a politician’s wife in the aftermath of his sudden and mysterious death. We Are Bookish has an exclusive reveal of the cover, but first, read our mini-interview with the author.

Tell us about your book cover! What was the cover design process like for you?

This is my third cover designed by Damon Freeman with my publisher Thomas & Mercer, and I love his work. The Next Wife and Somebody’s Home both have fabulous covers. The Widow cover is stunning.

What inspired you to write The Widow?

The experiences I had while my husband was serving in congress. Washington, D.C. is a great setting for suspense, of course.

What can readers expect from The Widow?

Hopefully, readers will enjoy my brand of domestic suspense which delves beneath the surface of seemingly perfect lives and, in this story, a sneak peek inside Washington, D.C. political society.

Cover design is constantly changing and evolving. Is there a current trend in covers that you enjoy? What do you think is the secret to a good book cover?

I think it’s such a fascinating art. Covers are expected to say so much, to captivate a reader in the blink of an eye. If an author has multiple novels, the cover should carry the author’s brand as well as the particular title’s essence. That’s why I’m thrilled with The Widow’s cover. It does both so well.

What books do you recommend we pick up while we wait for The Widow to hit shelves on November 15?

There are so many great books coming out this year and I’ve been lucky to read an advance copy of some of them. I highly recommend The Long Weekend by Gilly Macmillan, My Summer Darlings by May Cobb, and The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark, just to name a few.

Now, let’s get our first peek at The Widow!

Here’s the official summary for The Widow:

A husband with secrets. A wife with no limits. A riveting novel of marriage, privilege, and lies by Kaira Rouda, the USA Today bestselling author of The Next Wife. Perfect for fans of Scandal, House of Cards, and Succession!

Jody Asher had a plan. Her charismatic husband, Martin, would be a political icon. She, the charming wife, would fuel his success. For fifteen congressional terms, they were the golden couple on the Hill. Life was good. Until he wasn’t.

Martin’s secret affair with a young staffer doesn’t bother Jody personally. But professionally? It’s a legacy killer. Soon a reporter gets word of this scandal in the making, and Martin’s indiscretions threaten to ruin everything Jody has accomplished.

When Martin suddenly dies, it’s a chance to change the narrative—but the reporter won’t let go of his lead. As the balance of power shifts in the Asher house and on the Hill, it’s time for Jody to take control. And there’s nothing the ruthless widow won’t do to secure the future she’s entitled to. Even if she has a secret of her own.

  1. The cover is spectacular. I love the storyline and am anxiously looking forward to reading your new novel. The Best Day Ever blew my mind and I suspect this book will do the same. Thank you, Kaira, for your great books.
