Lies and Weddings by Kevin Kwan

Kevin Kwan, author of the beloved Crazy Rich Asians, is back this season with a new comedy. In an effort to hide his family’s debt, Rufus Leung Gresham (future Earl of Greshambury) lets his mother convince him to find and seduce a wealthy woman at his sister’s wedding. His plans go awry however when the nuptials are interrupted by a volcanic eruption.

When Among Crows by Veronica Roth

Veronica Roth drew inspiration from Slavic folklore for this fantasy novella. Dymitr is a hunter, willingly sacrificing his soul to kill monsters. But when he’s told to find the witch Baba Jaga, he must align himself with a dangerous foe: Ala. A curse plagues Ala, so when Dymitr offers a cure in exchange for her help, she agrees and the two set off on a mission through the Chicago underground.

You Should Be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian

One of our must-read books of spring 2024, this queer historical romance novel from Cat Sebastian is set in 1960s New York. Arts reporter Mark Bailey isn’t happy to be tasked with covering news about New York’s new shortstop, Eddie O’Leary. The baseball season feels endless, but as he gets to know Eddie, Mark suddenly finds he never wants the assignment to end.

When We Were Silent by Fiona McPhillips

Looking for a suspenseful read that will keep you on your toes? Take a trip over to Highfield Manor, a prestigious private school in Dublin. Thirty years after graduating, Lou Manson is dragged back to the manor after a former classmate’s brother reveals he’s bringing a lawsuit against the school and wants her to testify. Lou wanted to leave her memories of Highfield behind, but the past is quickly catching up with her.

A Crane Among Wolves by June Hur

Inspired by a true story, June Hur’s latest young adult novel takes readers to Korea in 1506. The people in Joseon live in terror of King Yeonsan, though when Iseul’s sister is taken by the king, she decides to risk everything to get her back. On her journey she crosses paths with Prince Daehyun, the king’s half-brother, who—unbeknownst to her—is plotting to remove Yeonsan from the throne once and for all.

Oye by Melissa Mogollon

Melissa Mogollon’s novel explores the relationships in a Columbian American family through a series of phone calls from Luciana to her older sister Mari. When their grandmother Abue receives a worrisome diagnosis, Luciana’s mother expects Luciana to step up and care for her. Acting as a caretaker and translator is a heavy weight on Luciana’s shoulders, but it also gives her a new understanding of Abue and before she knows it, secrets about their family history are being revealed to her.

Escape Velocity by Victor Manibo

Knives Out in space with a Parasite twist” is all we needed to hear to get this near-future thriller on our TBRs. With the Earth ravaged by climate change, those with money and power take to space stations to await news of a settlement opening on Mars. A group of Rochford Institute graduates gather for a reunion at Space Habitat Altaire, a luxury resort in Earth’s orbit. They arrive ready to brag about their accomplishments and vie for a slot on the Mars settlement—but everything changes when someone is murdered.

Second Night Stand by Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters

Romance novelist Karelia Stetz-Waters teamed up with her wife Fay to craft this contemporary sapphic romance. Ballet dancer Lillian Jackson and burlesque dancer Izzy Wells meet as competitors on a reality talent competition. They’re each in dire need of bringing home the million-dollar cash prize, and the only thing between them and victory are the feelings they start to develop for each other after a one-night stand.

The Instruments of Darkness by John Connolly

Bookish sleuths can reunite with private investigator Charlie Parker this May. In his case, Charlie is working with lawyer Moxie Castin on the case of a mother accused of kidnapping and killing her child. Everyone in town from her husband to the local politicians seem to believe she’s guilty, but Charlie isn’t convinced just yet. He sets out to learn as much as he can and finds his way to a mysterious house located deep in the woods of Maine.

Don’t Be a Drag by Skye Quinlan

Skye Quinlan’s sophomore young adult novel transports readers to New York City’s drag scene. Briar Vincent is spending the summer with her brother, the drag queen Bow Regard. Briar doesn’t plan to get involved herself, until drag king Spencer Read disses a new performer. Determined to knock the king down a few pegs, Briar signs up for the bar’s annual drag king competition—transforming into Edgar Allan Foe.
